A Substantial Antique Chicago & North Western Railway Strongbox Nice Railroad Document Lock Box. This is a great old find from an estate. This heavy antique box shows a lot of history. I know that the handle at least appears to be cast iron. This box is quite solid and built to last.
It could still be used today as a safe locking box. On the bottom inside is a remnant of an old paper label that was painted over. I was able to identify the rail road based on this label. The name "NORTH WESTERN RAILWAY" is visible, and I was able to track this down to C&NW Railroad based on the Jackson Boulevard Chicago address. It weighs an ounce under 14 pounds.
It measures about 15 inches wide. The main box measures about 10 inches deep, and counting the hinges and hasp it is a little over 11 inches deep. The height is about 5 inches tall including the hardware.Looking at the lid from the inside it looks like it may have had some solid repair to the hinges long ago. It also shows signs of repainting long ago with splatters of cream colored paint on the outside. Definitely an unusual historic conversation piece. Lock up your goodies in here!
