Offering a BURLINGTON ROUTE Railroad Hot Box Journal Cooler manufactured by Cook Company in the early 1900's in Flint, Michigan. This is completely original and still has the securing chains that were used by Burlington Route Railroad. It measures over 2 ft. In length, stands nearly 1 1/2 ft high and is very heavy indeed. The object of this piece of equipment was to drip water and cool the wheel bearings on railroad car wheels while in transit and thus it eliminated a lot of fires and saved the railroads hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Overheating was a constant problem in the early years of railroading and the Cook Company was quite the innovator. These rarely ever are found for sale anymore as most were scrapped by the railroad yards decades ago.
