These desk sets are designed by Aviation Flying Furniture, and hand-built by the craftsmen in our aircraft restoration hanger from riveted aircraft aluminum. The 3 diameter cockpit-style alarm clock is by Trintec and features a U. The IFF switch box is a 76+ year-old "new old" stock WWII relic. These "friend or foe" IFF switch boxes were used in a variety of WWII combat aircraft including fighters like the P-47 and P-51, and bombers such as the B-17, B-24 and B-25.
The switch box measures 3 3/8" X 3 1/8" X 1 3/4" with a set of toggle switches controlling "recognition colored lights on the exterior of the aircraft. Used when returning from a night mission where the airfield operators watched for an enemy aircraft sneaking in the darkness, the pilot would signal with a pre-arranged set of colors and/or a flashed code word on the lights. The toggles controlled the lights and a key button for sending code words are on the box face.
