This is an Antique R 1-9 car side route Rollsign Signbox. This sign came from the R-1/9 cars of the IND subway, which were built by a few different builders Pullman, American Car & Foundry and Pressed Steel - between 1930 and 1940. There were over 1700 built. The last of them were retired and scrapped in the 1970s. A few still exist as part of museum collections, including the New York City Transit Museum and the Shore Line Trolley Museum in East Haven, CT. Each car had two "signboxes" at each side of the car. Each signbox housed a full rollsign. The one on the bottom displayed the route, while the 2 on the top displayed the destinations. These signs were used when the R-1/9 cars were. To the ex BMT Eastern Division - sort of the elephant grave yard for older subway cars. This rollsign box measures 10 inches wide by about 27 inches long & 4 inches thick. Readings on front & back except the SS. OF AMERICAS LOCAL (ONE'K' WAS TAPED OVER). J NASSAU STREET (ONE'J' TAPED OVER). SS SHUTTLE (DECAL PLACED OVER BLANK LEADER SECTION-ONE SIDE ONLY).

Signbox was bead blasted and re-painted. Sign a bit age worn. Tape repais on blank leader.

Some surface rust on the sign rollers. Sign curtain has marks, stains, a bit of surface rust on the blank leader, etc. Please carefully review the photos. Great for bar or restaurant, dorm room, den, etc.

Truly a museum quality antique. Own a piece of New York history!
