This is an Antique R 1-9 car front route Rollsign Signbox. This sign came from the R-1/9 cars of the IND subway, which were built by a few different builders Pullman, American Car & Foundry and Pressed Steel - between 1930 and 1940.

There were over 1700 built. The last of them were retired and scrapped in the 1970s. A few still exist as part of museum collections, including the New York City Transit Museum and the Shore Line Trolley Museum in East Haven, CT.

Each car had two "signboxes" at each end of the car. Each signbox housed a full rollsign. One displayed the route, while the other displayed the destinations. These signs were used when the R-1/9 cars were.

To the ex BMT Eastern Division - sort of the elephant grave yard for older subway cars. This rollsign box measures 16 1/2 inches wide by about 17 inches tall & 10 inches thick. K (ONE'K' WAS TAPED OVER). J (ONE'J' TAPED OVER).

This signbox is in excellent condition. Was bead blasted & re-painted.

Sign curtain has some original subway dirt but in great shape. Please carefully review the photos.

Great for bar or restaurant, dorm room, den, etc. Truly a museum quality antique. Own a piece of New York history!
