Antique Powder Flask with transportation Box. Very rare item in excellent original condition with no corrosion, the lock and key function ok. An item warranting further research, the label is Bales & King Gun and Pistol makers No 36 Nassau street Dublin and at their manufactory 29 Taristock street Covent Garden London. A nice mahogany dove tail jointed transportation box with the wax seal still in place, this seal was said to be a Lord Lieutenant of Ireland seal used for the controlling and transportation of gunpowder as there were numerous accidental explosions in Ireland at that time.
Some pilfering for quarrymen also occurred. The Ballinacollig Royal powder mill in Cork was at one time the largest powder mill in the world supplying Britain with gunpowder for the Napoleonic wars. The transportation and storage box has hanging game of Duck , Curlew and Hare and the dimensions of the box are 7.5 inches High, 6 inches Broad, 4.5 inches Deep. The weight is 1212 Grammes. The metal gunpowder flask has good joints with no dents, the brass dispensing nozzle and cap has good threads.
From the remains of the wax seals on the front of the box there is evidence that the box has been used for transportation al least twice.
