Vintage 1948 New York Subway BMT R-11 Car Destination Rollsign in Signbox

The R-11 cars were built in 1948 by The Budd Company - only 10 were built. They were to be the forerunners of a fleet for the 2nd Avenue Subway (only partially built many years later). This particular sign was made by The Hunter Illuminated Car Sign Co on November 2, 1948. 2 NORTH TERM & BMT.

Sign reads: SIDE ROUTE No. Sign curtain is made of keystone (shiny cloth like) material. The sign was made to show the same destination inside and outside the train on the same material.

That is why the destinations are all printed twice, with one upside-down. The destinations on this sign are. The signbox measures 32 inches by 6 inches by 8 inches. The R-11 sign boxes were the only one with the distinct art-deco crank handle.

Sign is in good used condition with an imperfection or 2. Signbox was repainted (possibly by the Transit Authority). Please study the photos for condition. Great for bar or restaurant, dorm room, den, etc. Truly a museum quality antique.
